It’s Len’s last day at his old job, so I was just trying to come up with some delicious dinner plans to help mark the date. The funny thing is, I was actually salivating over this Rosemary Chicken recipe. And then I remembered I won’t be eating it. Oops. Does it count as cheating when you have sampled a savoury bite of meat in your mind? I hope not!
Once I remembered my vegetarian conscience, I started looking for a tofu recipe that would make me salivate like that again. Tragically, I haven’t found many vegetarian choices that have quite the same effect as our old stand-by recipes. I’ve tried nearly every imitation meat product out there, and have decided that only meat producers are capable of making something that tastes remotely appetizing. How ironic! All of the Yves products are awful, loaded with this fake smoked flavour that makes me gag. Does this throw my vegetarianism into question? I’m obviously not devout, because I still eat fish and seafood, but actually degrading soy sausages might land me back in the land of the “I used to be a vegetarian, until…” camp. Must tread carefully here.
I just have to keep reminding myself of the reasons I’m doing this: treading lightly on the Earth, not participating in the industrialization of animals for food, not having all that on my conscience, and the health benefits of a pescetarian diet. Then I head off to the internet in search of some recipes that I will eventually come to love, with some experimentation and the old adage, “If at first you fail, try, try again.” And tonight, I think I’ll dip into that stash of locally trolled prawns I have in the freezer from Share. I was saving them for a special occasion, and I think tonight’s just such a night.
