Here we are at the end of June, and it’s the busiest time of the year. Between the end of preschool, the birthday party planning marathon, and political party events, I’ve been feeling a little stretched. And from what I gather, it’s only begun. Once my kids hit the school system, both of them are in organized sports, and I’m working, I’ll be in for a state of busy I never imagined possible.
Despite the busy factor, I went out with three girlfriends on Tuesday night and finally saw my first movie in a theatre in four and a half years, Sex and the City. I had expectations, setting myself up for disappointment that didn’t materialize. It was great! I laughed. I cried. I laughed until I cried. And I cried some more.

I might have over-empathized, I might have been hormonal, but still it was a great way to spend an evening with friends! We went out for a drink together beforehand, and got caught up a little, and then sat down to share our popcorn and re-live one of our favourite shows together.
My favourite character is still Carrie, but I think we’ve all got a little of each of these women in us. If we don’t see ourselves, we see our friends, our sisters, any of the women in our lives, which makes us connect so well to the characters. It was a treat to revisit them.
I will miss you Mr. Big…

sigh
And then last night, I found myself falling for new characters. I was unable to put down my book club book, Water for Elephants. Oh. My. God. Internet, this is an amazing story! You MUST read it! I was intrigued by the title, interested by the opening scene, and hooked by the end of the first page!
We had a cloudy day here today, and all I wanted in the world was to crawl into bed and curl up with this book. Alas, I had two tired children wanting me, and all of me, and nothing else, except maybe a snack, a glass of milk, a glass of water, to pretend this and that, and play this game…
The good thing is, not being able to read all day will make the book last longer. I’ll get to hang onto the characters a little longer, and savour their world just a little more. Well, at least until next week’s book club meeting. And might I add that this book, our host chose it in September! Loooong before all the accolades it’s getting now! Nice.
In the meantime, I’ve been slacking off on writing and some other important work. No blogging, no letters the editor, and no, not even a call into the radio (even when my MLA was on the radio the other morning, praising the virtues of the government’s investment in Strong Start programs, while ignoring the 75% of the population that are working Mums who can’t take their children to the centres. This kind of programming should be accessible to all, which means including it in child care…but I digress!). I will just make it through the rest of this busy week, and then I’ll get back on track again.
At least I can say that it’s been a busy, crazy week, but I’ve made time to enjoy myself, both by myself, and with friends. I’ve made sure that I’ve had time away from the kids too, which is probably what’s allowing me to write this post right now. And busy? Before I come off sounding so hard on you, I have to say you build character, and keep me happy most of the time. So as much as I complain, you keep me sane.
