It’s all starting to come together a little more here at Michelle Kirby 08 campaign headquarters. I have been working on my brochure, and trying to hone my message a little better. It’s so hard to include all the things I think are important, without overwhelming the voter with too much information.

I’ve decided to go with three main themes instead of two. I think these are more specific, and will make it easier for the voters to get to know me.

Local Action on Climate Change

  • Improved walking and cycling safety in Oak Bay, especially on routes to schools
  • Improved public transportation, with more buses, and more bus routes
  • Support for local farmers, local markets, and local food production
  • Advocating for the continuation of the regional compost pick up now being piloted in parts of Oak Bay
  • Expansion of Oak Bay’s recycling program to include soft plastics
  • Encouraging a ban on cosmetic pesticide use for lawns and gardens

  • “Climate change requires our immediate attention. Oak Bay has been making some very positive steps forward, but I would like to see more done. From my experience, it’s often community members that have to organize and rally together before Council will consider making changes that will benefit the environment. My goal is to provide some leadership from Council on environmental issues.”

    Preserving Oak Bay Character

  • Encouraging residents to maintain their older homes, beautiful gardens, and green spaces, because without them, we lose our sense of history and connection to the place we love
  • Support for local small businesses that allow everyone to shop closer to home, and provide excellent customer service from neighbours you know and trust
  • Protection for our urban tree canopy, because the big trees are so much apart of Oak Bay’s charm

  • “I’ve done a lot of walking in Oak Bay. When you have two small children bursting with energy, and a very small house, you need to get out every day. I’ve walked nearly every street in Oak Bay and I love the look and feel of our community. I will work hard to preserve Oak Bay’s charm.”

    Building Community

  • Support for an Oak Bay Community Association to help get residents involved in local decision making, as well as encouraging neighbour-to-neighbour connections
  • Legalizing Secondary Suites allows for a more inclusive, diverse community, helping seniors to keep their homes, and young people to pay their mortgages

  • “I grew up in a small town, with a strong sense of community. Oak Bay is small enough to have that small town feel, but I would love to work on building our sense of community, and neighbourhood in Oak Bay. A community with a diversity of ages makes it more vibrant and resilient, and I think allowing secondary suites will further these important community goals.”
