Although I’m not surprised that PM Harper got his way with the prorouging of Parliament today, I’m still disappointed. Just when child care advocates were starting to again get our hopes up that we’d have a sympathetic government, they are delayed, and denied yet again.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, a fellow child care advocate passed along this article from Justine Hunter at The Globe and Mail.
I am incensed by the BC Liberal government’s lack of decent priorities, their lack of concern about the children living in poverty, and the lasting effects this has on all of us as a society! I am so tired of them putting themselves, and their Games first. It’s very frustrating. And meanwhile, the Ontario Liberals are committing to reducing child poverty in five years, beginning with $300 million in increased funding targeted at programs for low income families. Too bad we only have conservatives that call themselves Liberals in BC.
I am laid up at the moment with Wry Neck, so my writing is probably suffering from all the pain medications, and muscle relaxants I’m taking. I couldn’t resist sending a letter to the editor in reply though. I can’t do much, but I can type with my laptop propped just so in my bed.
Dear Editor,
No surprise here.
Children, particularly the children of poor parents, are the first to lose when it comes to the BC Liberals. For five years now, we’ve held the title of child poverty capital of Canada. But the government still sees it fit to call BC “The Best Place on Earth”?
Every construction worker that worked on something for the Olympics got a nice, shiny medal with Gordon Campbell’s name on it. There’s nearly double the “Fast Ferries” cost going into the bottomless pit of a Convention Centre. And yet there’s nothing for improvements to my child’s school, now overrun with kids because the district was forced to close two nearby schools due to funding shortfalls. They have to have two assemblies, because they can’t fit the whole school into the gym at one time.
The BC Liberals better get their priorities straight, or they are going to find themselves without tickets to the Olympics come the May election!
